Planning a Culture of Success

It's not just a question of making every day count: you also have to count every day. The first day, day 1,000, has to be an event. Everyone in the team has to know what day it is, every day.

Build a War Room

We have our hand-drawn 1,000-day plan on the wall, and it looks rather friendly and informal, but behind it we have our professional project management process. I like the war room to have previously been something fancy – it sends a message. We convert the boardroom or the chief executive's meeting room, or some other nonsense. (I once sacrificed a private dining room that I had inherited when I took over to be the war room!) It says: there's nothing more important in this business.

The war room is open, anybody can go in there and read it. At Fairline, for example, where there was initially a huge gap between management and unions, I invited the union reps to have their meeting in the war room, because we all had a common interest in the success of the business, and I needed their help. They knew how to build boats, and I didn't.

They were understandably reluctant, but after we showed them around the war room they were our biggest advocates. They could see the changes we were making, because we mapped the progress on those walls.
